Hello! I'm Jasper! I'm a terrier mix. I have quite a history- and story to tell! First of all, understand that when one starts out as a stray, it's not by choice. Something happens to the humans, or one gets lost. But always, we canines prefer to be with loving, caring human pack leaders!
When I was a young pup of 9 months old, I was running the streets and roads of Hillsdale County, Michigan with a buddy (a fellow canine). Yes, we were strays. When we were found, I had something stuck in my hair (on the top of my head) that gave me a rather strange hairdo- so the people at the shelter called me "Alfalfa"- after a boy in the "Little Rascals" movie. I didn't care for the name, but what do ya do?
My buddy almost immediately got adopted! I didn't. (I figure I was being kept for someone special, someone who could appreciate my wonderful self!) I was sent to the Ann Arbor Human society, rather than be destroyed. (Whew! That was close!!)
One day a couple came in and took me. I was the female human's Birthday present! (I like that!) Since then, my humans have worked with me to improve my manners a bit, but they love me for who I am. I'm now nine years old, and still with them, so I must be doing something right!
Recently Auntie M came to stay with me while my humans went away. She was amazed at how wonderful I am on the lead, listening and obeying commands!! (I'm rather proud of myself!)
We have a pond near our home. Auntie M took me for a walk there. The geese know me , my female human, and the other canine that lives here. (His name is Hunter, and you'll hear from him another time.) When we walk by the pond, we like to sort of "herd" the geese towards the water. We've trained them to listen to us. They don't even hiss any more!
When I'm in the back yard, I love to pretend to explore! And, of course I have to see if there have been any critters on our property!
I sit quietly, waiting for Auntie M to finish her coffee and let me in. She was pleased at my good manners, for I let her be the first in the door- (if she insists).
The other thing I impressed her with was the fact that if she tells me to sit and wait, she can put my food dish down, and I'll wait until she tells me I can go eat.
( I DON'T MEAN TO COMPLAIN, BUT CAN YOU BELIEVE SHE MADE ME SIT NEXT TO THAT FULL DISH, JUST SO SHE COULD TAKE THAT PICTURE?!)
Oh well, one has to make allowances for these humans, I suppose!
I understand Auntie M will be coming back soon- so I'll have to think up some new adventures to tell you about! You'll be hearing about the other canine who lives here. I do have to say, when he's around my manners aren't quite as good- well, not at feeding time, anyway. But that story is for another time.
All in all, I think Auntie M and I get along just fine. She thinks I'm wonderful. Perhaps I fooled her a bit by being on my best behavior, but why not? For a "stray", I think I've turned out to be just that- WONDERFUL! In fact, I probably could be in pictures! What do you think? The next Canine of the year?
